Extrait de Parfum, explained
Extrait de Parfum versus Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette — what the concentrations actually mean, and why it changes how long a fragrance lasts.
Buying fragrance online means committing before you smell it. That is uncomfortable, and the way around it is not guesswork — it is narrowing the field before you spend.
Fragrance names tell you nothing. Families tell you almost everything. Most things fall into a handful of broad groups:
Note pyramids are usually listed top, heart, base. Most people read the top notes and buy on those — but the top notes are gone within thirty minutes. The base is what you and everyone around you will smell for the rest of the day. Read the list backwards.
This is the entire reason 10 ML sizes exist. A discovery size gives you enough wearings to know whether a fragrance suits you in real conditions — on your skin, in your climate, at the times you would actually wear it — for a fraction of the cost of finding out with a 50 ML bottle.
Our Discovery Set exists for exactly this: all five entries in 10 ML, so you can live with each one for a week before committing.
First impressions are unreliable. A fragrance that seems too heavy in the first ten minutes often settles into something entirely wearable, and one that seems perfect on first spray can become cloying by hour three. Judge at the end of the day, not the start.
Heat amplifies fragrance. A heavy amber or oud that is comfortable in December can be overwhelming in June, and a light citrus that vanishes in winter performs well in heat. It is reasonable to own two things for two seasons rather than one thing for both.
Narrow by fragrance family rather than by name, read the base notes rather than the top notes, and buy a discovery size before a full bottle. A 10 ML gives you enough wearings to decide properly.
A set of small sizes — usually 5 to 10 ML — covering a brand's range, so you can try everything before committing to a full bottle. It is the standard way to enter a fragrance house you have not smelled.
Two to four for most fragrances, and toward the lower end for higher concentrations such as extrait de parfum. If people tell you they can smell you before you enter a room, reduce it.
Notes & Archives is an independent extrait de parfum studio in Pakistan. Five entries, from Rs. 750 for a 10 ML discovery size. See the archive.
