Choosing your first niche fragrance

Buying fragrance online means committing before you smell it. That is uncomfortable, and the way around it is not guesswork — it is narrowing the field before you spend.

Start from families, not from names

Fragrance names tell you nothing. Families tell you almost everything. Most things fall into a handful of broad groups:

• Fresh / citrus — bright, clean, usually the easiest to wear and the shortest-lived.
• Floral — the largest family by far, ranging from soft and powdery to sharp and green.
• Woody — dry, warm, and generally the most versatile in cooler weather.
• Amber and resinous — sweet, heavy, long-wearing. Often labelled 'oriental' in older writing.
• Oud and smoke — the heaviest group, and the one most associated with the region. Divisive and worth sampling before committing.

Read the base notes first

Note pyramids are usually listed top, heart, base. Most people read the top notes and buy on those — but the top notes are gone within thirty minutes. The base is what you and everyone around you will smell for the rest of the day. Read the list backwards.

Buy a discovery size before a full bottle

This is the entire reason 10 ML sizes exist. A discovery size gives you enough wearings to know whether a fragrance suits you in real conditions — on your skin, in your climate, at the times you would actually wear it — for a fraction of the cost of finding out with a 50 ML bottle.

Wear it for a full day before deciding

First impressions are unreliable. A fragrance that seems too heavy in the first ten minutes often settles into something entirely wearable, and one that seems perfect on first spray can become cloying by hour three. Judge at the end of the day, not the start.

Account for the climate

Heat amplifies fragrance. A heavy amber or oud that is comfortable in December can be overwhelming in June, and a light citrus that vanishes in winter performs well in heat. It is reasonable to own two things for two seasons rather than one thing for both.
